About Billet Steel O-Ringed Clutch Select Valves:

The 6L series transmissions use two valves labeled clutch select valves to manage oil flow into the clutch packs. These valves use oil pressure at the opposite end of the spring to activate, and can erode the bore of the valve body in this area due to repeated abrasive force around the valve.

Our billet steel O-ringed clutch select valves prevent this concern permanently by imposing a seal on the portion of the bore that wears. Further, we redesigned the valve to limit its travel the necessary amount for this seal to always stay captured in the bore to ensure that it never wears down or requires replacement; a true permanent fix for one of the most common causes of erratic shifts.

About our Billet Steel Compensator Feed Valve:

The compensator feed valve system of the transmission prevents friction in clutch packs that are not engaged by providing a sustained flow of oil to keep the apply pistons of the transmission in an eccentric (unapplied) position. Naturally, wear in this portion of the valve body can be a massive liability to the transmission, and is a common cause of burnt clutches requiring internal repair.

Our re-engineered compensator feed valve adjusts the pressure in this circuit of the transmission upward to protect this critical function of the valve body and prevent failure of the clutches caused by defects in the compensator feed system. Best of all, this upgrade simply installs with no modification or machine work necessary. Fast and easy.

About our Billet Steel TCC Regulator Valve & Boost Valve:

One of the most common complaints on the General Motors 6-Speed transmission is vibration and malfunction of the torque converter. Many people believe the solution is an “upgraded” torque converter or different fluid. This is misleading, and generally untrue. The reason people believe this is because of a propaganda campaign by General Motors to misinform both the public and their service technicians that switching to a fluid with different friction dynamics to assuage unfavorable behavior of the torque converter is the proper solution in order to save money.

Factually, the problem is almost always valve bore erosion around the components in the valve body designed to control the torque converter’s lockup clutch system. Our TCC Regulator and Boost valve work together to restore oil pressure to these critical components and prevent both mechanical failure and adverse conduct of the torque converter.

About Billet Steel O-Ringed End Plugs:

As with most transmissions, the General Motors 6-Speed uses “end plugs” to capture valves inside the valve body. This is a cheap and fast way to close off the end of a valve bore during manufacturing without threading or aluminum welding. This is not inherently a problem, however, these end plugs are manufactured with no seals to prevent oil from exiting these valve systems when the valve body begins to decay with age.

Our billet steel O-Ringed end plugs impose a seal on the valve body around these components so that even as the valve body ages, oil will not leak out of the valve circuit through the end plugs. This restores line pressure to circuits compromised by damage of the valve bores.

About our Laser-Cut Crushing Steel Separator Plate w/ Custom Oil Geometry:

Another well-documented problem in the General Motors 6-Speed valve body is the deeply untrustworthy separator plate. This plate features a host of design flaws that produce unpredictable failures in this transmission. The paper bonding material on the factory plate is known to tear/come off congesting the valvetrain inside the valve body causing random meltdown of the transmission.

Our laser-cut valve body separator plate resolves all of these issues and more. It firstly features a 100% paperless design, computer cut by cold-rolled hardened steel that is multiple times thicker than the factory separator plate. This ensures that valve body flexion over time will not cause oil to travel between circuits in the valve body, accommodating for years and hundreds of thousands of miles of valve body flexion with no machining needed.

Furthermore, our Laser-Cut Crushing valve body separator plate is 100% screenless, permanently ensuring that no valve body screens will ever blow out and cause valve seizure by the solenoids. This is a total solution to a common problem, and delivers peace of mind. All testing performed proved that this is a superior design in terms of both reliability and performance.

Best of all, we modified some of the oil circuitry in the plate to expedite oil flow to oncoming clutches as well as increase the flow of lubrication to the bearings, shafts and gears. This separator plate is an instantaneous improvement in all oil-flow throughout the transmission. This is the difference between the heart of a healthy young adult and a 70 year old, obese smoker with clogged arteries. Clean Arteries = Better Bloodflow.

Adding an Additional Check Ball to Resolve the 2-1 Downshift Clunk in Cold Weather:

Our separator plate is designed to accept an 8th check ball on valve bodies that didn’t originally use it. Although some late model 6L’s have this update from the factory, the vast majority do not. Our billet valve body upgrade kit includes this update, standard.

Frequently Asked Questions about the General Motors 6-Speed Transmission:

Q: Is the General Motors 6L Series a good transmission?

A: Known as a cheaply designed transmission, the General Motors 6L Series transmission is a definitive and obvious source for a variety of problems. This includes but is not limited to: Valve body crossleakage, burnt clutches, damaged broken shafts and much more. Nearly all of these ailments are preventing with a comprehensive valve body upgrade.

Q: Is there TCM Tuning for the General Motors 6-Speed transmission?

A: Yes! The General Motors 6-Speed transmission can be easily tuned to request different shift points, different lockup protocol and various other functional changes. However, most of these parameters do not need to change for the transmission to work optimally. Mechanical upgrades are significantly more important.

Q: What is the lifespan of a General Motors 6-Speed transmission?

A: Although there are many variables, the General Motors 6-Speed transmission lasts an average of 100,000 to 150,000 miles in unmodified trucks with average applications. Vehicles with larger tires, tuning, power-adding systems and other aggravating factors usually fail much sooner. Transmissions with religious maintenance routines that are used largely for highway miles can last longer in some cases.

Q: What is the best upgrade for a General Motors 6-Speed transmission?

A: The single most important upgrade someone can perform on a General Motors 6-Speed transmission is a valve body. The valve body is where the overwhelming majority of their problems begin, and can yield huge benefits to any application. All General Motors 6-Speed transmissions, regardless of application, should have one of our upgraded valve bodies.

Q: What are the service intervals of a General Motors 6-Speed transmission?

A: It is our advice that this transmission is hot-flushed and a complete fluid and filter change is executed every 25,000 miles on average. Extraordinary applications may want to perform these services more frequently, whereas highway exclusive applications can safely push a bit further between services.
