Why does the 68RFE transmission have such a bad reputation?
The 68RFE has developed a poor reputation because several of its factory weaknesses can compound into expensive failures, especially in trucks that tow heavy, run larger tires, or produce more power than stock.
The transmission itself is not a fundamentally bad design. The bigger issue is that the factory 68RFE has relatively little margin for error when subjected to the enormous torque of the 6.7L Cummins.
The Overdrive Clutch Is a Major Weak Point
One of the most common 68RFE failures involves the overdrive clutch pack. The factory clutch system has limited holding and thermal capacity. When the clutch begins to slip, even slightly, it generates heat very quickly. That heat can distort clutch plates, damage friction material, alter clutch clearances, and eventually lead to complete failure.
This is especially common in trucks that:
- Tow heavy trailers
- Run larger tires
- Produce increased engine torque
- See frequent commercial or severe-duty use
Once the overdrive clutch begins slipping, failure can progress rapidly.
Valve Body Wear Can Start the Failure
One of the most important things to understand about the 68RFE is that the damaged clutch pack is often the result of another problem rather than the original cause. The valve body controls the hydraulic pressure responsible for applying the transmission's clutch packs.
As the valve body wears, internal hydraulic leakage can develop. That leakage reduces the amount of pressure available to hold the clutch firmly applied.
The failure chain can look like this:
Valve body wear → hydraulic leakage → reduced clutch pressure → clutch slip → excessive heat → clutch failure

Pressure-Related Problems Are Common
The 68RFE is also well known for pressure-related trouble codes such as P0871.
Drivers may experience:
- Limp mode

- Transmission warning lights
- Intermittent shifting problems
- Repeated pressure-switch codes
These symptoms can originate from valve body wear, hydraulic leakage, separator plate problems, pressure-switch issues, or problems within the clutch circuits. Properly diagnosing the complete hydraulic system is critical.
The Factory Transmission Has Limited Margin for Cummins Torque
The 6.7L Cummins produces substantial torque at very low engine speeds. That is excellent for towing, but it places tremendous load on the transmission. Once engine tuning, larger tires, heavier trailers, or other modifications are added, the amount of torque the transmission must hold can increase dramatically.
The factory 68RFE may work acceptably in an unmodified truck under moderate conditions, but additional load exposes weaknesses in:
- Clutch capacity
- Hydraulic pressure
- Valve body durability
- Mechanical strength
- Torque converter performance
- Heat management
This is one of the main reasons the transmission has gained such a negative reputation among Cummins owners.
Heat Accelerates Nearly Every 68RFE Problem
Heat is especially damaging to the 68RFE because many of its common problems generate even more heat once they begin.

Hydraulic leakage causes clutch slip.
Clutch slip generates heat.
Heat damages friction material and transmission fluid.
Damaged components create even more slip.
The transmission can therefore enter a cycle where a relatively minor hydraulic problem eventually becomes a major mechanical failure.
Some Failures Are the Result of Treating the Symptom Instead of the Cause
Another reason the 68RFE has developed such a poor reputation is that simply replacing damaged components does not always produce a lasting repair. If a transmission has burned overdrive clutches, installing new friction plates may fix the immediate damage, but it does not necessarily correct:
- Valve body leakage
- Inadequate clutch capacity
- Improper clutch clearance
- Hydraulic pressure loss
- Mechanical flex
- Torque converter problems
- Excessive heat
If those underlying issues remain, the replacement components can eventually fail again.
The 68RFE Is Better Viewed as a Transmission With Correctable Weaknesses
