That leads to three extremely common questions:

The short answer is that newer 68RFEs received several worthwhile factory improvements, but Ram never completely eliminated some of the fundamental hydraulic and clutch-related weaknesses associated with the transmission.
If everything else were equal, Next Gen Drivetrain would generally prefer a 2019–2024 68RFE over the earliest versions because the later transmission received significant improvements to torque converter clutch and Reverse hydraulic control.
However, model year is only part of the story. A well-maintained older 68RFE equipped with a properly engineered upgraded valve body can potentially be a much better transmission to own than a neglected newer truck with 150,000 miles of towing, hydraulic wear, slipping clutches, and burnt fluid.

Don't shop for a 68RFE based on year alone. Shop based on condition, maintenance history, intended use—and whether its known hydraulic weaknesses have been addressed.
For owners looking to improve an otherwise healthy stock transmission, an upgraded 68RFE valve body is one of the first preventative modifications we recommend.

The 68RFE was discontinued in Ram Heavy Duty pickups after the 2024 model year. Beginning with the 2025 Ram Heavy Duty, the 6.7L Cummins was paired with the new TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic transmission.
So when discussing the "newest 68RFE," we're talking about the 2019–2024 generation.
Are Newer 68RFEs Better Than Older Ones?
Yes—but with an important qualification.
Ram and Chrysler made meaningful changes to the 68RFE over its long production life.
The later versions are not identical to the transmission introduced behind the 6.7L Cummins in 2007.
There were two particularly important update periods:
Late 2010 / 2011
The valve body and solenoid system were substantially revised.
2019
The pump, valve body, solenoid pack, Reverse control system, and torque converter clutch control underwent another significant redesign.
Those updates improved certain aspects of transmission operation.
But they did not completely redesign the fundamental clutch-to-clutch architecture of the 68RFE, nor did they eliminate every known hydraulic wear point.
That distinction matters.
2007.5–2010 68RFE: The First Generation
The original 68RFE appeared with the 6.7L Cummins during the 2007 model-year transition.
These early transmissions use what Next Gen Drivetrain categorizes as the Gen 1 valve body architecture, which uses a seven-checkball design.
The early design employed a different solenoid and Overdrive-control strategy than later transmissions.
One important concern involved wear in the valve body around the solenoid switch valve.
As this area wears, hydraulic oil can leak between circuits.
That becomes particularly important because hydraulic leakage can reduce the pressure available to apply the Overdrive clutch.
The result can become:
Valve body leakage → reduced OD clutch pressure → clutch slip → excessive heat → burned Overdrive clutches
This failure mechanism is well documented in RFE transmissions. We've identified the solenoid-switch-valve and plug area as a particularly troublesome source of bore wear and hydraulic leakage that can contribute to OD clutch failure.
Did Chrysler Improve the Early Valve Body?
Yes.
During the transition around 2009–2010, Chrysler began using an anodized valve body casting intended to reduce solenoid-switch-valve bore wear.
Late in the 2010 model year, the design was revised further.
The Overdrive solenoid was eliminated, hydraulic circuits and the separator plate changed, and Overdrive clutch control was handled differently. Technical documentation from ATSG identifies the updated anodized valve body specifically as an attempt to help prevent solenoid-switch-valve wear.
These changes eventually led into the Gen 2 configuration commonly associated with 2011–2018 trucks.
2011–2018 68RFE: Better, But Not Perfect
The 2011–2018 68RFE is generally an improvement over the earliest version.
This generation uses the later five-checkball hydraulic configuration and the updated solenoid/control strategy.
The factory anodizing was a sensible improvement because the objective was to reduce valve-body bore wear.
But here's the important point:
Reducing wear isn't the same thing as eliminating wear.
The solenoid switch valve and its surrounding hydraulic circuit remained an important concern. Even later RFE valve bodies can develop enough wear to create hydraulic cross-leakage.
This is why 2011–2018 trucks can still experience symptoms such as:
- P0871
- Shift flare
- Harsh or inconsistent shifts
- Pressure loss
- Overdrive clutch slip
- Burned OD clutches
- Limp mode
- Delayed engagement

So while we would consider the 2011–2018 design preferable to the earliest factory architecture, it should not be interpreted as Chrysler completely solving the 68RFE's hydraulic problems.
What Changed in the 2019 68RFE?
The largest late-production redesign arrived in 2019.
Ram made substantial changes to the:
- Valve body
- Pump
- Solenoid pack
- Torque converter clutch control
- Reverse clutch control
The 2019-and-later valve body added another lower valve-body section to the channel plate.
This new section contains a Reverse accumulator assembly, dedicated TCC control solenoid, and an additional separator plate.
The solenoid pack was also redesigned.
Earlier transmissions required the Low/Reverse solenoid to perform multiple duties involving both Low/Reverse and torque converter clutch operation.
Starting in 2019, the TCC received more dedicated control.
According to our research, these revisions were introduced to improve torque converter clutch apply/release control and address Reverse-release clunk concerns.
That was a legitimate improvement.
Did the 2019 Redesign Fix the 68RFE?
No.
This is where the discussion becomes particularly important.
Despite the extensive 2019 hydraulic redesign, we've noticed that two important components remained essentially unchanged:
The pressure-regulator lineup remained the same.
And:
The solenoid switch valve remained the same.
That matters because the solenoid-switch-valve area is one of the hydraulic circuits associated with RFE Overdrive problems.
In other words, Chrysler significantly improved certain aspects of torque converter clutch and Reverse control without eliminating every hydraulic weakness that could contribute to clutch failure.
That is why Next Gen Drivetrain does not consider a 2019–2024 68RFE immune to valve body problems simply because it is newer.
What Year 68RFE Is the Best?
If we are comparing completely stock transmissions of similar mileage, maintenance history, and condition, our preference would generally be:
2019–2024 68RFE
Why?
Because these transmissions contain the latest version of the factory hydraulic-control architecture.
Benefits include:
- Improved TCC control
- Dedicated TCC solenoid
- Revised Reverse control
- Revised pump configuration
- Auxiliary/lower valve-body system
- Later electronic-control strategy
The changes are substantial enough that the 2019-and-later valve body, pump, and solenoid assembly must be treated as a distinct design generation.

There isn't one single 68RFE model year that we believe every buyer should automatically avoid.
However, if all transmissions had identical mileage, condition, maintenance, and usage, the earliest 2007.5–2010 units would generally be our least-preferred factory configuration.
Why?
They have:
- The earliest hydraulic architecture
- Earlier valve-body design
- Earlier solenoid strategy
- Fewer accumulated factory revisions
- And today, simply because of age, potentially significantly more wear
That does not mean a 2008 68RFE is automatically bad.
A properly maintained and upgraded early transmission can operate extremely well.
Likewise, purchasing a 2023 truck does not guarantee a trouble-free transmission.
What Should You Really Avoid?

We would be considerably more concerned about a 68RFE exhibiting:
- Shift flare
- Slipping
- Delayed engagement
- Harsh or inconsistent shifts
- P0871
- Gear-ratio codes
- P0740 or abnormal converter operation
- Excessive transmission temperature
- Burnt-smelling fluid
- Significant debris in the pan
- Unknown tuning history
- Years of heavy towing with poor maintenance
than we would be about the transmission's model year alone.
Is a 2019–2024 68RFE More Reliable?
It has better factory hydraulic control in several areas, but we would not describe the fundamental reliability concerns as completely solved.
The 2019 changes primarily improved areas involving:
- Torque converter clutch control
- Reverse application/release
- Solenoid functionality
The redesign did not fundamentally eliminate all of the known Overdrive clutch and valve-body wear mechanisms. We continue to identify thin OE Overdrive clutch components, solenoid-switch-valve leakage, incorrect line pressure, and related hydraulic issues as important causes of 68RFE OD failure. This is why Next Gen Drivetrain still recommends improving the hydraulic system on later-model trucks.
A newer 68RFE is improved—not perfected.
Why the Valve Body Matters Regardless of Model Year
Whether your Ram has a 2008, 2014, 2018, or 2024 68RFE, every clutch inside the transmission depends on hydraulic pressure.
The transmission pump generates pressure.
The valve body must then:
- Regulate it
- Route it
- Contain it
- Deliver it to the correct clutch
- Release it at the correct time
If internal leakage develops, the transmission's ability to hold engine torque can deteriorate.
The clutch itself may still have perfectly usable friction material.
But if there isn't enough hydraulic force applying that clutch, it can slip.
And once it slips:
Slip creates heat.
Heat damages the clutch.
Clutch damage creates more slip.
Eventually, a hydraulic problem becomes a mechanical transmission failure.

Should I Upgrade the Valve Body on a Newer 68RFE?
Yes, we believe a properly engineered valve body upgrade makes sense even on a 2019–2024 transmission when increased reliability is the objective.
The 2019 factory redesign improved TCC and Reverse control, but importantly, the solenoid switch valve remained fundamentally unchanged.
This is significant because that circuit is associated with hydraulic cross-leakage and Overdrive clutch concerns throughout the RFE family.
Simply owning the latest version therefore does not eliminate the benefit of improving hydraulic integrity.

This is our preferred factory generation because it includes the most extensive hydraulic-control revisions.

However, it still benefits from an upgraded valve body.
2. 2011–2018 68RFE — Good Foundation
These trucks received the later valve-body architecture and anodized casting intended to reduce bore wear.
They remain extremely popular and have enormous aftermarket support.
With the right valve body, converter, clutch, and calibration upgrades, this generation can become a very capable transmission.
3. 2007.5–2010 68RFE — Earliest Design
These are the units we would rank last in completely stock form.
They represent the earliest version of the 68RFE hydraulic system and today are also the oldest examples on the road.
That said, we would not avoid a clean early truck solely because of its transmission year.

If we had three otherwise identical Ram trucks sitting in front of us—one with a 2008 68RFE, one with a 2015, and one with a 2022—we would choose the 2022 transmission based strictly on factory architecture.
But real-world trucks are almost never identical.
Mileage, towing history, tuning, tire size, heat, fluid maintenance, and current transmission condition can matter considerably more than model year.

Buy the healthiest truck—not simply the newest transmission.
Then address the weaknesses that remain.
For an otherwise healthy 68RFE, one of the first places we recommend starting is the valve body.
The factory improved the 68RFE throughout its production life, but even the final 2019–2024 design retained hydraulic components associated with some of the transmission's most persistent problems.
